milk
A lightweight, beginner-friendly X11 desktop where the window manager, the bar and the desktop live in one program with a single configuration file, supporting both tiling and floating windows. Made in Odin.
About
milk, the minimal interface layout kit, is a super lightweight, self-contained X11 desktop. The window manager, the bar and the desktop live in one program and share one configuration file, and every workspace can be styled on its own, with instant feedback while customizing it. User simplicity is the absolute priority.
It is a long-held vision of the perfect window manager, inspired mainly by EmbargoTM's Temenos, with a window manager based on a port of dwm 6.5 to Odin.
Tiling or floating
Since version 1.1.0, milk supports floating windows next to tiling, modelled on openbox: title bars, window and desktop menus, per-application rules and bindable actions. It also supports desktop icons.
Settings without restarting
Settings change live, without restarting the window manager: switch between tiling and floating, change the keyboard layout and test it right away, or restyle the bar and windows depending on your mood. Everything is stored in ~/.config/milk/milk.json and can be changed later with milk settings.
Installation
On Arch Linux and its derivatives, the installer asks what you want, installs every dependency and sets up spoil, the file manager, and lactase, the compositor, next to milk. After logging in, a setup walks through the language, theme, keyboard, wallpapers, bar and windows.
