Markers Markup Language

A universal, academic focused, simple to use Markup Language with its own parser, document generator, API and library fully implemented in Haskell.

The Markers website, with downloads for Windows and Linux, the documentation and the API

About

Markers is a Markdown-inspired markup language focused on simplicity and power for academic and general use. It converts a special flavor of Markdown into a variety of formats, aiming to be the easiest and most accessible academic paper formatting language available, and its entire compiler is built in Haskell.

Running markers --format=abnt <input-file> starts a server that watches the file and updates the output in the browser in real time, so a document can be written in any text editor and formatted to the Brazilian ABNT standard without worrying about layout until it is time to export.

Features

  • A Markdown-inspired syntax that is easy to learn and fast to write.
  • Automatic chapter numbering and table of contents generation.
  • Built for the structure of monographs, theses and research papers, with ABNT export.
  • Bold, italics, strikethrough, underline, monospaced and colored text, in hexadecimal or RGB.
  • Euler, Markers' own math notation: far simpler than LaTeX, with fractions, roots, matrices, accents, greek letters by name, named definitions and an automatic list of equations.
  • Planned: TISS, a custom stylesheet language for granular control over the document's appearance.

A Markers document

A Markers Document Title
By: Person A, Person B
At: University of Open Source
Location: Brazil
Keywords: Markers, Markup Language, Academic Paper, Haskell

This is the main body text, which is *not encapsulated* in any structural tag.

# This is a Chapter (Level 1 Heading)
Chapters act as sections and automatically populate the table of contents.

!math(x = (-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4*a*c)) / (2*a))

Status

Markers is in pre-alpha and under active development, released under the MIT License. Text formatting, chapters, lists, metadata, HTML export, automatic summaries, printing and ABNT export are done; media support and Euler are in progress, and references, footnotes, PDF export and TISS are on the roadmap.

The development of Markers earned the Academic Title of Brilliant Student at FATEC Rubens Lara, and is described in the paper Markers: Development of a Markup Language.
